North Ridge Route
Contemporary climbers use the camps shown here on the route Mallory and Irvine pioneered. Some notable discoveries and landmarks along it:
- Andrew Irvine's Axe.
An ice axe found in 1933 at 8,460 metres had three nicks on it, a pattern that Irvine used to mark his belongings.
- George Mallory's Body.
Found at 8,230 metres by a 1999 expedition looking for clues to what had happened to him and Irvine.
- East Rongbuk Glacier.
Stretching from 6,500 to 7,000 metres; extremely steep, at times almost vertical, terrain. Today climbers use fixed ropes to navigate it; those ropes were unavailable to Mallory and Irvine.
- The Second Step.
8,580 to 8,625 metres; near vertical obstacle; many believe Mallory and Irvine would have been able to make it past this point; today, there is a ladder to help climbers.
