Southeast Ridge Route
These camps are used today by climbers who follow in the pathfinding footsteps of Hillary, Tenzing, Messner, Habeler and Weihenmayer. Important landmarks:
- The Khumbu Ice Fall.
5,330 to 5,940 metres; extremely dangerous section with crevasses, avalanches and falling ice; blocks of ice as large as houses have been known to tumble down here.
- Lhotse Face.
A steep, icy wall stretching from 6,500 to 7,700 metres; the entire distance is climbed with the assitance of fixed ropes.
- "Knife-edge Ridge"
An extremely narrow ridge of rock and snow that drops off 3km towards Tibet on one side and 2km towards Nepal on the other; the most exposed and frightening section of the climb.
- The Hillary Step.
Just 70 metres from the summit, this 12-metre rock face is the last significant challenge on the climb and probably the most famous single physical feature on the mountain.
